PQRI Quality Measures

There are four quality measures for mental health professionals to include in assessment and treatment services with Medicare patients: verification of current medications (measure #130), pain assessment (#131), screening for clinical depression (#134), and screening for elder maltreatment (#181).  These measures were discussed in the December web conference on PQRI, presented by Dr. Paula Hartman-Stein (see Archived Recordings below). The entire PQRI document describing all measures is available on the CMS website,http://www.cms.hhs. gov/PQRI/downloads/2008PQRIMeasureSpecifications123107.pdf.  An overview of PQRI on the CMS website can be located at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI.  When applicable screening measures are incorporated with at least 80% of new patients, and reported on insurance claims as G-codes, Medicare pays a financial bonus of 2% of the allowable fees to the Medicare provider.

For those readers who are interested in pain assessment measures, there are a couple of websites with descriptions and extensive lists of pain and distress measures by category.  See http://www.bps.org.uk/_publicationfiles/consultation-responses/Pain%20Assessment%20Project%20-%20Pain%20&%20Distress%20Measur es.pdf andhttp://www.clinicalinfometrics.northwestern.edu/archive/Tab%208%20Pain%20Measures.pdf.  Some pain assessment measures that appear to have particular relevance for the nursing home population include the Geriatric Pain Measure, the Brief Pain Inventory, the Abbey Pain Scale for Patients with Late-Stage Dementia, and the Quadruple Visual Analog Scale.

Upcoming Web Conferences

On February 11, Dr. Margie Norris will join Concept Healthcare for a web conference, and will share her 25-years of experience in a presentation on "Reimbursement Essentials in Geropsychology Practice."  Margie has a long career in direct services to older adults and consultation in LTC, and has served on numerous committees on aging with APA, the Practice Directorate, GSA, and the Society of Clinical Geropsychology.  Dr. Norris' presentation will cover Medicare policy, billing and coding issues, and reimbursement.  Join us for this unique seminar and must-have information on understanding Medicare policy, and practicing in nursing homes and ALF's.  More info ...

On February 25, Dr. Joe Casciani will give a presentation on "Behavior Management, including Prevention of Aggressive Behavior and De-escalation Techniques."  This web conference discusses different approaches and interventions for a number of common problem behaviors in nursing home settings, and will explain how the recommended interventions are driven by the functional losses that accompany dementia and delirium.  Following a comparison of the 3 D's - dementia, delirium, and depression - the speaker will discuss the prominent triggers of problem behavior, and the 10 principles of prevention that apply in all settings.  Recommendations for managing specific problematic behaviors, such as disruptive vocalizations, catastrophic reactions, resistance to caregiving, and aggressive outbursts, will be addressed.  Upon completing this course, participants will have the tools needed to develop behavior plans, as well as useful inservice information for staff training.More info ...

Archived Recordings of Past Conferences

CONFERENCE RECORDING of the Physician's Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) presentation on December 12, 2009, by Dr. Paula Hartmann-Stein is available for playback.  Paula was the chair of the expert work group to develop the first quality measures for psychologists and social workers.  During this conference, Paula covers the technical details of conducting these measures, and how to bill for them in order to earn your bonus.  The PQRI quality measures are tools that are easily incorporated in your clinical practice, such as screening for depression, verifying medications, screening for abuse, and others.  All mental health providers who see Medicare patients are strongly encouraged to learn more about PQRI, and adopt the measures.  Order

CONFERENCE RECORDING of the January 14, 2009, presentation on Documenting Progress in Psychotherapy Using Outcomes and PQRI Measures by Brenda Billimoria, LCSW, is now available for playback.  If you've heard any of Brenda's presentations on Medicare billing, documentation, and medical necessity, you are familiar with her insights and recommendations on meeting Medicare standards while maintaining quality practices.  In this training, you will advance your skills and knowledge about using various outcome measures as well as the 2009 PQRI quality measures to monitor and document treatment progress, something Medicare always looks for in reviews and audits.  Order

CONFERENCE RECORDING of Dr. Peter Lichtenberg's seminar on January 28, 2009 on "Detecting Dementia in Older Adults" is available for playback.  During this conference, Dr. Lichtenberg reviews empirically-based approaches useful in screening for and detecting the presence of various dementing conditions and MCI, including delirium, Lewy Body dementia, vascular dementia, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.  Then, a number of measures and data gathering techniques are discussed, useful in tapping self-report, cognitive function, informant interview data, and behavioral observations.  In this 1-hour format, there is a considerable amount of useful information for practitioners and the families they work with.  Dr. Lichtenberg is one of the leading geriatric neuropsychologists in the U.S.  Order

Online registration is now open for Hospice Foundation of America's 16th annual Living With Grief® National Bereavement Teleconference, Diversity and End-of-Life Care, which will be broadcast Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 1:30pm-4pm ET.  A distinguished panel of practitioners, educators and hospice experts will examine how diversity influences end-of-life decision making and the impact that culture may have at the time of death and during bereavement. One of the goals of the teleconference is to increase sensitivity by helping professionals acknowledge how their own cultural values and assumptions influence the delivery of care. The program will include a special examination of end-of-life care and diversity, including how hospices are reaching out to diverse groups and incorporating traditional practices and alternative therapies. The program will also discuss the challenges that may occur when cultural considerations may cause ethical concerns or moral distress.  For more information, contact Kristen Baker at 800-854-3402 or
